Anglian net zero carbon target to include 26% from offsetting post 2030
Anglian Water’s strategy for meeting the sector commitment to reduce operational carbon to net zero by 2030 will cut total emissions by 74% leaving residual emissions to be offset from 2030 onwards.
In its recently published net zero strategy document, Anglian has aid out its plan to follow a target pathway on which it aims to:
cut emissions from 350,000tCO2e currently to 250,00tCO2e by 2024/25 – a 34% fall;
make a further cut of 100.000tCO2e by 2025/26; and
arrive at its target of residual emissions of 91,000tCO2e by 2029/30.
The company has highlighted its chief carbon reduction strategies as:
maximising energy efficiency and renewable energy generation and storage;
decarbonising its vehicle fleet;
maximising the value of its biogas;
procuring green electricity;
managing its process emissions;
developing its offsetting strategy; and
opting for alternative fuels.
Specific measures included:
installation of solar power capacity;
continuing its use of its biogas and wind turbine capacity for on-site use and export;
replacing its fleet with electric and liquified natural gas-fuelled vehicles;
using alternative fuels such as hydrogen and vegetable oil; and
abating process emissions after improving its understanding of their scale and location.
Anglian’s ambition for its offsetting strategy is to “maximise opportunities to remove carbon in our own land (insets) and adopt a leading position in offsetting by supporting new markets across our region that bring maximum co-benefits (offsets).”
