A tribute to former Ofwat chair, Philip Fletcher CBE

Philip Fletcher CBE, Ofwat’s director general from 2000 to 2006 and then its chair from 2006 to 2012, passed away on 10 February, aged 75.

Ofwat last week paid tribute. Jonson Cox, who took over from Fletcher as Ofwat chair in 2012, said: “Philip served Ofwat for over a decade. I knew him as someone who was very approachable to those in the sector, of high integrity, respected and warmly remembered by those who worked with him. We send our condolences to his widow Margaret and family.”

Fletcher (pictured) had a long career as a civil servant, including as deputy secretary at the Department of the Environment and as receiver of the Metropolitan Police before taking up post at the water regulator. He received his CBE in 2006 and served as a lay minister in the Church of England.

He was highly and warmly regarded in the water industry.
