The renewable gas industry body, Anaerobic Digestion & Bioresources Association (ADBA) has hailed a Bill to up tariffs paid for heat produced by burning gas produced from sewage and other waste as a “vital boost.”
The legislation will apply from tomorrow (22 May) and will restore tariffs available under the Renewable Heat Incentive that have been reduced through a series of degressions over recent years. Sewage digestion plants producing biomethane will be able to claim a tariff of 5.6p a kWh of renewable heat for the first 40,GWh. Once their plant is commissioned payments will be guaranteed for 20 years.
The renewable industry is now forecasting that the new tariff will lead to the construction of up to 40 plants over the next two years. Chief Executive of the ADBA , Charlotte Morton, said “It’s imperative that the government commits to long-term support for green gas beyond 2020 while the industry works to bring down costs to become financially self-sufficient.”
