Yorkshire joins Anglian and Northumbrian in launching their second joint innovation festival

by Trevor Loveday

Yorkshire Water has joined Anglian Water and Northumbrian Water’s Essex and Suffolk subsidiary in their launch of a second innovation festival to be held next year. Meanwhile Northumbrian has announced funding for projects that emerged from its own virtual festival held in September.

The new joint event will be a virtual adaptation of Anglian and Northumbrian’s Innovate East festival of 2019 in which participants met to develop solutions to key industry issues through design sprints and data hacks carried out over a few days.

The companies said it is inviting stakeholders from different organisations and industries “to build on the successful format and outcomes of last year’s event which attracted over 2,000 people from almost 300 organisations.” Issues addressed last year included leakage detection, natural capital, and social purpose and resulted, according to the organisers, in ten ideas now evolving into “real life” trials and solutions.

To take part in Innovate East 2021 individuals and organisations can sign up at www.innovateeast.org where they can also find information about the progress of 2019’s outputs.

Northumbrian Water Group has granted almost £130,000 worth of funding to develop ideas from its first ever all-digital Innovation Festival 2020. Of more than 100 ideas that emerged from the festival, eight projects are to receive backing. The projects focus on areas including customer service, staff wellbeing, leakage prevention and environmental impacts. Six others are being progressed unfunded, as “self propelling” projects.
