Irish Water gets €110m budget boost
The Irish Republic’s latest budget, just announced, has confirmed a record funding allocation of €1.557bn in 2023 for Irish Water – an increase of over €110 million compared to this year’s figure.
The budget lift primarily composed of an additional €48m for capital investment by the publicly-owned company.
Housing and local government minister, Darragh O’Brien, who is responsible for the water sector, said: “This continued investment in water will ensure the continued operation, repair and upgrading of Ireland’s water and waste water infrastructure.” Irish Water’s chief executive, Niall Gleeson, welcomed the financial boost. “The increase in capital investment in public water services is vital to support housing delivery, economic recovery, and for delivering environmental compliance."
Gleeson added: “The additional funding comes at a time of exceptional inflationary pressures within the global environment and will ensure our programmes of works continues at pace.“
The utility said projects now safeguarded to continue in 2023 include leakage reduction works and upgrades to water and wastewater plants and networks.
