Affinity Water and manufacturers urge customers to use white goods wisely

by Karma Loveday

While the wait goes on for mandated water labelling of white goods, Affinity Water has teamed up with domestic appliance manufacturer and distributor trade association AMDEA to call on customers to be green in how they use their dishwashers and washing machines.

In a new podcast for Affinity Water, chief executive of AMDEA, Paul Hide, said: “It isn’t just about how much water a consumer can use on different settings on an appliance it is about how we use machines. Are we buying the right size machine for our use? We shouldn’t be buying machines with a bigger capacity than we need. Are we filling the dishwasher or washing machine to its full capacity? Are we using those eco-settings properly? In many cases we are not. Some of the biggest impact to reduce our white-goods water use is in bringing about behavioural change and getting people to think about how they use appliances.

He said that with some 45 million dishwashers and washing machines in use in the UK "to get people to use the appliances they have got most efficiently will have a much bigger impact on the total water consumed than just encouraging people to buy the most water efficient new appliances.”

Director of corporate affairs and communities at Affinity Water Jake Rigg, said: “If we are going to tackle climate change, we will all need to change our behaviours including how much water we use in the white good appliances in our homes. The less water we use than the less we will need to abstract from our rivers and streams…We support AMDEA’s call to ask consumers to use the eco-settings that are already on appliances in most people’s homes.”
