Water firms provide customers with extra Covid-19 cash help

Water companies are providing beyond "business as usual" support to customers struggling with the economic impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic. Among the initiatives announced last week were:

• United Utilities has injected £3.5m into its trust fund to help people struggling to pay their bills. The money will be distributed in the form of grants to help people out of water debt, and also to support local organisations who can deliver money advice. Michelle Atkinson, the company’s head of income, said: “In the current circumstances, it’s likely that even people who have never been in debt before may find themselves struggling with bills. We absolutely can help.”

• Severn Trent gave £1m to charities and community groups making a difference and helping those struggling as a result of the coronavirus.
