Light to chair water consumer watchdog

Former chair of the Consumer Council for Water’s (CC Water's) Northern Region, Robert Light, has been appointed as new chair of the council.

Light’s (pictured) three-year appointment by environment secretary, Michael Gove, and Welsh minister for the environment, energy and rural affairs, Lesley Griffiths, took effect from 6 June 2019.

Under the code governing the appointment, appointees need to declare significant political activity to be declared. Light was a Conservative Councillor on Kirklees Council until November 2018.

Light has been a CC Water board member since 2015. Previously he has been deputy chair of the Environment Agency, deputy chair of the Local Government Association and on the Board of the Audit Commission. He is also head commissioner for the Independent Commissions on Civil Aviation Noise.

Light succeeds Alan Lovell, whose term ended earlier in the spring.

Chief executive of CC Water, Tony Smith, said light had been an “outstanding advocate for consumers” in the North of England adding: “I expect him to build on that good work as our new chair.”
