New data to aid in upping efficiency of pesticide use

by Trevor Loveday

The Centre for Ecology and Hydrology has produced new datasets, estimating the amount of pesticides and fertilisers used annually in each square kilometre in England.

The data will, the centre said, enable researchers, water companies and

policymakers to work with the agricultural sector to develop more sustainable farming methods, including greater efficiency in agrochemical application.

John Redhead, Spa8al Ecologist at the Centre for Ecology and Hydrology, said: the datasets: CEH Land Cover. plus Pesticides and CEH Land Cover. plus Fertlisers, were “the first of their kind to provide estimated usage rates of about 130 different pesticides and the main types of manufactured

fertliiser at such a detailed resolution, on a national scale.”
