Yorkshire applies for two more drought permits
Yorkshire Water in December added two more drought permit applications to the six it sought earlier in the month.
Both permits are in the River Derwent Valley area. The company has applied to the Environment Agency for permits – to run until 31 March 2019 – to up its annal abstraction at Loftsome Bridge while reducing its annual abstraction limit at Elvington.
Yorkshire is seeking to increase the annual abstraction limit at Loftsome Bridge by 2.3m cubic metres from 30.4m cubic metres and to decease the annual limit at Elvington by 2.3m cubic metres from 75m cubic metres.
The company said the drought permits will enable it to continue to continue to supply customers using river water, helping reservoir stocks to recharge over the winter period, which will help maintain supply to customers in the Yorkshire area.
An assessment of the potential environmental impacts of implementing the drought permits has been carried out in consultation with the Environment Agency and Natural England.
