Irish green watchdog takes to the skies to check water quality in lakes

TECHNOLOGY UPDATE

Irelands green regulator, the EPA, has announced plans to let a contract which would mean it could assess the condition of hundreds of lakes, some of which are used for drinking water supply, using satellite information from the European Space Agency’s €6 billion Copernicus Earth observation programme.

A pair of recently-launched satellites, known as the Sentinel 2 mission, pass over Ireland every two to three days, and will be deployed to determine the water quality of 812 lakes across the country and detect any changes.
