Consumer watchdog CC Water has called on water and sewerage companies to up their protection homes and businesses at risk of sewer flooding after research reveals incidence in inundated properties rose by nearly one third last year.
CC Water’s report: Clear way forward: Building a resilient sewerage and drainage system (2016/17) shows 5,700 properties suffered internal sewer flooding in 2016-17 which was a a 31% increase in the number of properties flooded internally in comparison to 2015-16. Sewer flooding at United Utilities was up 90% and up 39% at Thames Water.
CC Water applauded companies for an 11% year-on-year reduction in the number of external areas flooded with sewage in 2016/17. External flooding incidence has been cut by more than a third over the past five years.
The watchdog has challenged the industry to encourage developers and other partners to consider sustainable drainage systems.
