Green power at Scottish Water meets all of its electricity demand

Renewable power capacity on Scottish Water's estate has exceeded the company's demand for the first time since it launched efforts to reduce its energy bill and increase renewable generation five years ago.

A combination of Scottish Water’s investment in renewable energy and hosted private investment produces more electricity than the company consumes annually and is set double by 2018 the company said..

The water and sewerage company uses about 445 GWh a year at its 4500 sites such as water and waste water treatment works. It generates 54GWh itself through hydro, wind, photovoltaic solar, biomass boilers and combined heat and power.
