Portsmouth Water concerns over South Downs oil production proposal
Portsmouth Water is working with the developer of a proposed oil production project in the South Downs National Park and the Environment Agency to address concerns over possible water contamination from the project.
The project does not include hydraulic fracturing (fracking) assured the National Park authority.
Portsmouth engineering director, Rod Porteous, said “We have raised to the South Downs National Park Authority concerns over the potential risk to water contamination. These include issues such as a fuller evaluation of the risks to drinking water supplies.”
The developer, UK Oil & Gas (UKOG0 is looking to develop an oil discovery at Markwells Wood while assessing others at Horse Hill Portland and Baxter’s Copse along with new exploration and acquisitions in the Weald and Isle of Wight.
